Have you seen the white crosses on the four-lane?

All those white crosses that just appeared on the 4-lane are an effort of Wags and Whiskers - Spay / Neuter Advocates to draw attention to the need to spay / neuter our pets.  The 839 crosses represent that number of unwanted dogs and cats that had to be euthanized at the local Cumberland County Animal Shelter last year.  Wags and Whiskers believes that the sterilization of dogs and cats is the key to reducing the number of unwanted animals in our area, and thus the number that have to be euthanized.  They provide financial assistance for the sterilization operations, having helped to "fix" over 5,300 dogs and cats since they started in 2004.  In contrast, over 2,000 unwanted animals were put down by the shelter in 2004.  Spay / neuter is believed to be a major contributor to this improvement. However, this is a continuing need and the shelter intake and death numbers can clearly get smaller by preventing unwanted births in the first place.

Wags and Whiskers will be holding a Worldwide Spay Day celebration event on the courthouse lawn on Saturday, February 25 at 2 pm to recognize the responsible pet parents in our County and provide information about spay / neuter and other pet-welfare concerns. Financial assistance commitments and surgery appointments can be made during this event, as well.  For more information, visit their website at www.wawpr.org .
