Wags and Whiskers Pet Rescue

Foster Care Program

Our Foster Care Program provides temporary homes for companion animals; usually cats and dogs.  The reasons for this need vary, but the basic idea is to provide care to an animal until it can be adopted into a wonderful forever home.

About being a Foster Parent

  • Ideally, foster parents will be dues paying members of Wags and Whiskers.

  • Foster parents must be 21 years old or live with a 21 year old party that will take responsibility for the fostered animal(s).

  • Foster families must own their own home or, if renting, have written approval from their landlord.

  • Foster families are responsible for all expenses, except medical, connected with the care of the animal(s) they accept on behalf of Wags and Whiskers.

  • Foster families assume the risk of exposing their own pets to foster animals that may be harboring an illness.

  • Every effort will be made to perform a home visit before approval.

    • Ideally, foster homes for dogs/puppies have a fenced yard.

    • Ideally, foster homes for cats/kittens have a room where the pet(s) can be confined.

    • Ideally, all foster animals will be kept indoors.

  • Foster parents are required to sign a contract for every animal they accept.

These are things that need to be done for animals that are fostered:

  • Deworming – Fosterers will be given the necessary supplies.

  • Vaccinations (except Rabies) – Jackie B will give these shots to dogs and cats, but it is the fosterers responsibility to be sure it is done and ask Jackie to do it.

  • Rabies Vaccinations – these must be given by the vet, but it is the fosterers responsibility to be sure it is done.

  • Sterilization –  No pet will be released before it is sterilized.

  • Flea and Tick Control – It is the fosterers responsibility to be sure it is done.

  • Trips to the Vet – Transportation to the vet is the fosterers responsibility.

  • Photographs – make sure someone takes them.

  • Commentary – write appropriate comments for the Internet and Walmart board.

  • Adoption Events - Adoption events are held at least every two weeks on the first and third Saturday of every month.  It is the fosterers responsibility to see that their pet(s) is(are) available for our adoption events.
