Wags and Whiskers

Foster Care Program

Our Foster Care Program provides temporary homes for companion animals; usually cats and dogs.  The reasons for this need vary, but the basic idea is to provide care to an animal until it can be adopted into a wonderful forever home.

Want to be a Foster Family for Wags and Whiskers?

 Definition of Foster Family:

  • Ideally, foster parents will be dues paying members of Wags and Whiskers ($35 annually)
  • Foster parents must be 21 years old or live with a 21 year old party that will take responsibility for the fostered animal(s).
  • Foster parents will have email capabilities.
  • Foster families must own their own home or, if renting, have written approval from their landlord.
  • Foster families are responsible for food and shelter, transportation to the vet when necessary, transportation to adoption events, and the care of the animal(s) they accept on behalf of Wags and Whiskers.
  • Foster families assume the risk of exposing their own pets to foster animals that may be harboring an illness.
  • Every effort will be made to perform a home visit before approval.
    • Ideally, foster homes for dogs/puppies have a fenced yard.
    • Ideally, foster homes for cats/kittens have a room where the pet(s) can be confined.
    • Ideally, all foster animals will be kept indoors.
  • Foster parents are required to sign a contract to cover all of the Wags and Whiskers animals accept.
  • Foster parents are encouraged to express their opinions about and suggestions for the care, availability, and adoption of ‘their’ pets, but must accept the decisions made by the board and/or its representatives.

These are things that are done for animals that are fostered:

De-worming, vaccinations (including Rabies), sterilization (No pet will be released before it is fixed), Flea and Tick – Transportation to the vet, Photographs, Commentary, Adoption Events.  Adoption events are held at least every two weeks on the first and third Saturday of every month.  It is the fosterer’s responsibility to see that their pet(s) is(are) available for our adoption events.
