About the Book
I wrote Red Wine, Chocolate, and Life After 40 because women asked me to write it. I had written A Mother's Book of Love for our daughters to understand their own biology, and my friends said, "Great! Now write a book for us."
In Red Wine, I combine science with common sense. As a biologist, I follow the scientific breakthroughs in medicine and aging, and apply what I learn for my own use. I know that I can better manage my own health when I understand what is going on. I wrote Red Wine with that idea in mind, and to give you the confidence that I know what I'm writing about, I cite pertinent scientific studies to support my conclusions.
At times, I challenge the medical establishment.
At times, I challenge the food industry.
At times, I suggest what products to buy, what services to access, and which experts to choose.
Whether you are 40 or 90, your future depends on what you do today.
Part One of the book covers my Ten Steps to Slow Down Aging. The first two steps you already know: exercise and eating the right foods, and I give you plenty of reasons why. The third step is sleep, and why it is so important. The rest are very important, too. For example, do you know that those who have the most friends and confidants live the longest? And that friends are even more important than family when it comes to support because they can give you a strong social network. Do you know that the elderly who have few friends are more than twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's (though it is not the leading cause of Alzheimer's)?
Part Two of the book, I lovingly call the Problems of Aging. This half includes sections on menopause, urology, pain, osteoporosis, and sun and vitamin D. I guarantee that you will learn things you did not know before. The urology section is actually a presentation I gave to my women's group: Have You Done Your Kegels Today? I worked in urology research at a major medical center during the 1990's, and share what I learned. These private issues cause us great discomfort and fear, and I try to make you more comfortable with the subject.
You will find a wealth of information in this little book, and it is information that you can use immediately. The book is only 162 pages long, but packed, including bibliography and index. My writing style is personal and conversational, so there are not too many science parts that will put you to sleep.
