The Cannon Falls Historical Museum opened in 1979 in the old Fireman Hall. After devastating fires in 1884 and 1887, the city council voted to erect a fire hall. The building, completed in October 1888 at a cost of  $1,325, is made of stone and measures 24 feet by 35 feet with walls rising to 27 feet high.  Listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the Italianate structure is one of the nations oldest surviving fire halls.

Many displays in this museum depict the past of Cannon Falls.  Displays include:  a fireman's room with antique equipment, news articles and photographs; a mini classroom with old wooden desks, maps, and class yearbooks along with the school sports memorabilia; a kitchen, a parlor, a dentist or doctors office, and an old switchboard of a telephone company.

In addition to the displays, there are also bound copies of the Cannon Falls Beacon dating back to 1922, census books, references, and souvenirs of the past.  Research of family genealogy is available. The cost of the research is a donation to the museum. Contact the museum director for details.

Other items of historical interest are located at the Cannon Falls Library, including newspapers on microfilm, church and cemetery records, some census records, and many local histories. The library is located just down Mill Street from the museum at 306 West Mill Street.  Library hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday and Friday; noon to 8 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 9 am to 2 pm Saturday.
