WHAT IS AN OSTOMY?
Ostomy is a type of surgury performed when a person has lost the normal function of the bowel or bladder due to a birth defect, disease, injury or other disorder. Such operations include colostomy, ileostomy, continent ileostomy, and urinary ostomy. The ostomy allows normal body wastes to be expelled through a surgical opening in the abdominal wall. Some ostomates must wear special pouches over the surgical opening.
WHY AN OSTOMY CHAPTER
Ostomy chapters promote self-help and total rehabilitation (physical, emotional and social) of those who have had or will have ostomy surgury.
To the new ostomate and their family, an ostomy often seems strange and inconvenient, often times even a little frightening. Others who have had the same experiences, feelings and problems can provide reassurance and assistance.
Active, well-adjusted ostomates show a new ostomate that they too can resume a normal active life. Through the chapter, long time ostomates can learn about new ostomy products and techniques, as well as enjoy the satisfaction of helping others.
VISITATION PROGRAM
* Confidential pre and post-operative visits upon request of the physican or E.T. nurse, and permission of the patient.
* Trained and certified Ostomate Visitors who have successfully adjusted to the same type of surgery.
* Offers reassurance and visual evidence that an ostomy need not be a handicap.
* Medical advice is NOT given.
