Another project I was supposed to fail at
Another process improvement effort shot in the foot by incumbent maintenance staff.
Press #3 had an entirely different transfer table arrangement.  It was the largest of the three presses and had a belt driven transfer table versus the shuttle type on the other three lines. The operators would periodically crash the Hydraulic stretcher into the transfer arms as they changed the length for the stock being stretched. This would eventually bring down enough of the transfer arms that several hours of downtime were necessary to restore / rebuild them. Rebuilding them was the least of the problems. Since they are basically mini conveyors, belt tracking became an issue. We had spare arms available to be thrown on in an emergency but no way to pre-adjust the belts so they didn't crash and self destruct once installed. The only way it could be accomplished was to leave a maintenance tech inside the Safety Gates of the transfer area while the operator moved the stock. (Remember the operator that crashed the arms in the first place????) MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE! I fabricated this test Jig which allowed the weight of the arms to engage the drive gears so the belts could be preadjusted. It worked in both directions and allowed us to have pre adjusted arms to put on in small outage windows and eliminated the need to keep the biggest and most profitable line down for emergency service. The day shift Maintenance Supervisor dismantled it the week I gave notice...
