This page was last updated: November 11, 2002 , "Is that me?" 10/12/02 After cleaning up the goblin rats' nest of the unsightly goblin rats, we head back to town. Dimak picks up his freshly charged staff, and we look over the various items that were found in the nest. Mek'era goes to the local authorities on both sides and tells them of the recent robberies, goblin rats, and the fact that they wouldn't be bothering the townsfolk any time soon, but definitely be on the lookout. Lylia recovered a scroll from the cave written in a language unknown to the party, and Mylina identifies it and finds out that it came from a human. Lylia takes the scroll to the mage who recognizes the writing as goblin rat. With a smile Lylia convinces the mage to translate it for her. Meanwhile, Dimak contacts Tolvos and asks him about this rather powerful mage who seems a bit out of place in this town. Tolvos tells him that his name is Firth and he was a contemporary of General Staff's and that he is somewhat of an undisciplined, radical thinking, pacifist who really only looks out for himself, and didn't think it was his responsibility to help during the war. However, Tolvos does consider him congenial just not military material. Firth finishes the translation. Apparently whoever wrote it was named (loosely translated) "Knifebird" and was contemptuous of the goblin rats. He 'ordered' them to harass both nationalities within the town, and when the did so to be disguised as the other side. There is also an apparent air of nobility to the writing. Since it is later in the day when we finish our tasks we decide to stay one more night. For our second night in Border Town we decide to see how the other half live and go to the Parkosite inn called Inn of the Rainbow. From the outside in looked pretty much like all the other buildings in town, but once we step inside we are assaulted with color. Every table cloth is a different color, and suspended from the ceiling our multicolored glass spheres containing continual light spells that shed their light throughout the room. The seats are pillowed and plush. A bard was playing in the corner of the room. The food and drink were pleasant. When all was said and done, we discover that the proprietor is just as congenial as those of the Inn of the Red Turtle. He gives us the Royal Suite, and after he leaves Dimak discovers that in fact the architecture of this inn is identical to the last including the unused passageway behind the fireplace down to the common room. The following morning we wake and head downstairs for breakfast. We eat and ask for some food for the road and are given a leather bag filled with fruit. We decide to head to Qualsh straight away via the main trade road since it should be patrolled by members of Aquas Day. As the day goes by we notice that there are in fact no patrols, and the patrol posts are empty. Mek'era begins patrolling the area, but except for some wild horses doesn't find much until she checks out the next patrol post. She returns with news of an individual resting there and describes his appearance. Dimak recognizes him as a Tithlore and quickly tells the party what he knows of the race. They are an honorable, nomadic people composed of many tribes, and tend to keep to themselves for the most part. They are a people known for their hunting skills as well. Dimak decides that to approach with authority and rank would be best until we know for sure what this persons intentions are given the fact he is 'breaking' the 'law' by using a patrol post for himself. We arrive at the patrol post and introductions are made. He introduces himself as Garum Farsight, and tells us he didn't know of the rules, but meant no harm. We decide that he can be trusted for now and make camp. As night falls we setup our watches, and Garum goes hunting for a horse. After a few hours Illian is on watch, and wakes up Mek'era for her evening flying patrol. As Garum is heading back to camp he hears a sound in the trees and stalks up to investigate meanwhile Mek'era spots a group of people stalking through the trees toward the party and flies down to investigate as well. They both discover it is a party of 6 and they are stalking expertly through the woods straight toward our camp. Garum takes up a position behind the party and nocks an arrow. Mek'era sees him and flies over him to get his attention. Suddenly talking to him causes him to fire his arrow off into the woods behind him. She quickly identifies herself, and Garum says he needs a distraction and for her to fly off make some noise and then alert our team. She does that and luckily it works to keep the approaching party from finding Garum. Mek'era notifies Illian of the situation and the direction they are approaching from, and Illian wakes everyone up. We quickly move into the woods and set out to take out the approaching party. Garum fires an arrow at the bowman in the group but misses. Mek'era flies back and misses with her first shot, but hits with the second. The one of the stalkers shouts that it is an ambush and turn to run away. The mage in their group conjures mists of sleep and send it in the direction of our advance unfortunately catching Flick and putting him to sleep. Lylia hits one of them with an arrow followed by Rask lighting up the area with the fires of Moredan allowing us to see the 'bad guys' better. Illian uses his one of his Daggers of Climbing ties to a rope to stick one of the bad guys and start pulling him to the mists. The battle comes to an abrupt end as Garum charges in with his axes, Mylina kills the mage with her katana, Mek'era scores a critical hit with a hold person on two of them, followed by another critical with an arrow on their bowman, and Illian scoring a critical on pulling the dagger rips it out of the attackers leg, and the last man simply gives up after some prompting from Garum. During these last seconds Mylina is backstabbed by the thief however, and badly injured. We tie up the three that aren't dead and begin questioning them as Mylina searches the mage and finds a very nice leather pouch, ring and staff. With the last item she identifies it and finds out that the mage was working for someone else, and that he was from Qualsh. The captured attackers tell us that his name was Alexander, and they were working for him and don't know anything else. Mylina also finds a tattoo of the dove and crossed daggers on the mage. Meanwhile, Garum tells us that the wild horses Mek'era saw are actually already broken and probably belong to people that this group has robbed. So Illian gets his horse and gives Garum a ride to go gather up the horses and bring them back. We discover that the pouch is actually a gateway into a 24"x12"x10" chest located at Alexander's house. Currently the chest holds coins and gems. The ring and staff we identify as a Brawler's Ring, and a Travelers' Staff. We hypnotize the thieves, strip them down to their loin clothes, give them three of the horses and command them to turn themselves into the authorities at Border Town within 24 hours. |
